Gloria Dei Prays!

At Gloria Dei, prayer is such an important aspect of our daily life together.  The following ministries and activities that are listed are but a small part of the prayer related happenings at Gloria Dei.  Please email the church office for more information or to request prayers. (gloriadei@mygloriadei.org).

Lutheran pastor and martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote the following:

"The Scripture meditation leads to prayer... the most promising method of prayer is to allow oneself to be guided by the word of the Scriptures... In this way we shall not become the victims of our own emptiness.  Prayer means nothing else but the readiness and willingness to receive and appropriate the Word, and, what is more, to accept it in one's personal situation, particular tasks, decisions, sins, and temptations... And we may be certain that our prayer will be heard, because it is a response to God's Word and promise.  Because God's Word has found its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, all prayers that we pray conforming to this Word are certainly heard and answered in Jesus Christ." (Life Together)

PRAYER CHAINS: Gloria Dei has several "Prayer Chains."  These are members that have volunteered to be contacted for particular prayer requests.  Again, if you have a prayer request, please contact the church office about this ministry.

SUMMER OF PRAYER: Each summer, the staff focuses on some aspect of prayer with a sermon series and a Bible study.  Some of the past themes have included: "Great Prayers of the Bible," "The Prayers of Jesus," "The Lord's Prayer," and others.  You are certainly invited to join in on these summer activities.  Watch the bulletin and newsletter for upcoming details for 2011.

PRAYER VIGIL: The Saturday before "Rally Sunday" we offer a "Prayer Vigil."  That is, 12 hours of continuous prayer for the world, the community, church, and ourselves.  Each person is encouraged to sign up for a half hour time slot of prayer.  A small booklet is provided to lead the person through this half hour.  Watch the newsletter for upcoming details.

PRAYERS FOR HEALING: Whenever there is a fifth Sunday in a month, Gloria Dei offers a special healing service at the 5pm worship service.  This is a quiet, meditative service of Holy Communion, music, and prayers for healing.  You are invited to kneel at the altar for prayers for yourself or someone else.

PRAYER SHAWLS: A group of volunteers knits wonderful prayer shawls that they present to various people in need of prayer (ie. someone recovering from surgery, a new mom, someone mourning a loss, someone going off to college, etc.).  The person is "wrapped" in the prayers of this group too.
